Airtel Digital TV Going Desi With Self-Made STB Production

Airtel DTH to stop imports of HD set-top boxes. Airtel Enters Partnership with Skyworth Electronics for self-made production.


Bharti Airtel plans to go Desi all around. The telecom decides to stop imports of High-definition Set-top boxes by 2021 end. The decision to start the production of STBs in India has been welcomed by the Telecom Industry. Airtel is no longer issuing orders for High-Definition Set-top Boxes as per this decision. The already existing orders will be followed upon and shipments will be received after which the company will be issuing self-made STBS.

Airtel DTH has partnered with Skyworth Electronics and begun production in Noida. DTH consumers eagerly wait to know the quality and other details.

A Flashback

Earlier Airtel had been manufacturing non-smart STBs via MyBox Tech in Pune. At a further point, the decision was made to stop the production and import the STBs from Thailand and Vietnam so that the company could leverage FTA duty benefits (Free Trade Agreement).

Why Has Bharti Airtel Taken Such Measures Now?

Our sources reveal that the production and distribution of imported STB’s were impaired severely by the onset of the pandemic and there were delivery delays. To overcome this hurdle and as part of an emergency backup plan, the idea to produce desi Set-top boxes has emerged. This is a great initiative on behalf of Bharti Airtel and we can expect to see more such innovative ideas shortly.
