Vikings Valhalla: Everything About This Historic Drama

It was the end of an era for the Vikings after a thrilling six-year run. When it launched in 2013, the Emmy Award-winning show was the History Channel’s first original scripted program, but it was so successful with viewers that a renewal was swiftly granted. It was created, executive produced and written by Michael Hirst (Elizabeth, The Tudors). There may have been a season finale, but Vikings fans can look forward to a new season of epic Norse adventures in Vikings: Valhalla.

Viking: Valhalla – Plot

King Aethelred (Bosco Hogan) of England issues an executive order on St. Brice’s Day ordering the execution of all Vikings inside his realm to safeguard the Saxons’ claim to the throne. King Canute (Bradley Freegard) of Denmark calls on all Vikings from throughout the world to join him in Kattegat on his quest for vengeance a year after the last film’s events.

Leaving Greenland, a troop of Vikings set off with a definite goal in mind. Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett) and his sister, Freydis (Jennifer Connelly), are among them. There is a Christian Viking who took advantage of Freydis many years ago, and they are looking for him.

Prince Harald Sigurdsson, the right-hand man of King Canute, commands the troops (Leo Suter). They are contending for the throne of Norway as a reward for their allegiance to Canute, Harald’s half-brother, Olaf Haraldsson (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson). Also, Olaf aims to promote the gospel of Christianity and encourage the rest of the Vikings to do the same.

Aethelred (Louis Davison) is on his deathbed in England, and his wife, Queen Emma (Laura Berlin), of Normandy, is preparing to inherit the kingdom until their son Edmund (Louis Davison) is ready to take over. When he needs help, his adviser Earl Godwin (David Oakes), is there to help him in every manner imaginable.

Freydis notices that Olaf has brought the guy she is looking for. Assaulting him in the middle of a feast with her brother’s aid, she kills him instantly in cold blood. But Jarl Haakon (Caroline Henderson) tells Olaf that she will make the final decision on his behalf.

Jarl Haakon orders Leif to join the army and battle under Canute to settle his sister’s debt. While Freydis remains behind in Kattegat, he accepts the command and sets sail with the fleet.

Edmund, frustrated with Emma’s preparations for the approaching invasion, seizes power and claims credit for her ideas. One of those ideas was to enlist the help of the Earl of Mercia, who finally decides to accompany him in war.

In Kent, the Vikings arrive and then proceed to London. A swamp separates them from the London Bridge, their lone impediment. After crossing the swamp, Harald and Leif discover a bridge flaw that the others have already discovered.

It is Leif’s idea to shift the tide in their favour by luring Edmund into the battlefield and then destroying the bridge with Olaf and his ships.

As soon as the Vikings conquer London, Canute declares that he and Edmund will govern England together. To stave off Olaf’s menace, he gives Harald the Norwegian crown. However, Olaf has other ideas and travels to Denmark.

After being brought to Uppsala to discover her fate, Freydis meets Kre (Asbjrn Krogh), a religious fanatic. In the name of Christianity, he intends to conquer Kattegat. To learn the ways of the shield maidens, Freydis returns to Kattegat.

After being ordered to fight in Denmark, Canute marries Emma so that she would be in charge while he is away. Sweyn Forkbeard (Sren Pilmark), his father, also joins him in England as a steward. Edmund is killed in a riding accident not long after he arrives. Queen Aelfgifu (Pollyanna McIntosh) and Olaf conspire to hold Canute’s fleet at ransom to get what they each want. Meanwhile, Aelfgifu sets out for England to claim her rightful role as queen of England.

The Filming Status Of Vikings: Valhalla

Pre-production has already begun at Ashford Studios in Wicklow, Ireland, a site that is extremely recognisable to Vikings fans. This location served as the primary shooting location for the original Vikings television series for a long time.

Ashford Studios gained clearance for a €90 million expansion in 2019 after production of the last season of Vikings was completed, enabling them to create five additional studios and support space. Vikings: Valhalla’s production value will suffer as a result.

Because the major production base is the same as for Valhalla, we may anticipate seeing a lot of the neighbouring familiar Irish places. Many of the same actors and staff members will also be involved in the spinoff.

While the series is a continuation of the History Channel’s smash program Vikings, it is a whole new show that will appeal to both new and seasoned audiences equally.
