The Witcher Season 2 : Where to Watch, Updates and More

The Witcher season 2 is finally here! The second season of The Witcher, which is based on our beloved monster hunter, premiered on December 17, 2021, on Netflix, and will follow Geralt and Ciri as they go to the Witcher stronghold Kaer Morhen. Other well-known Witcher characters, such as Vesemir, Eskel, as well as Lambert, are expected to appear as well.

In this blog, we’ll talk about everything you need to know about The Witcher Season 2 that you should read before you watch the show!

An Overview of The Witcher

The program is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels (rather than the games, which introduced many of us to Geralt and his comrades), and its first season established the world via a disconnected sequence of vignettes. We anticipate a more linear plotline in the second season. Currently, IMDb has given Witcher Season 2 a rating of 8.2 out of 10.

The Witcher Season 2 Release Date

The Witcher season 2 premiered on 17th December 2021. Season 2’s release date was confirmed at WitcherCon in July (a virtual event co-hosted by Netflix and CD Projekt), making it 2 years after the first season’s December 2019 release.

The Witcher season 2 production was delayed many times owing to the COVID-19 outbreak. Throughout the first six months of the pandemic, Netflix halted production on most of its series. The Witcher ensemble reassembled on production on August 17, 2020, although the shooting was delayed in November 2020 as four staff members were tested positive for the virus. Furthermore, after the shooting resumed again, Henry Cavill had a minor injury on-site in December 2020, delaying shooting once again.

Season 2 finished filming in early April 2021, while Hissrich announced in May that The Witcher Season 2 by Netflix was “way into post-production” on the second season.

…and a “top secret” episode title

Additionally, Netflix stated that the very first episode of The Witcher season 2 would adapt the short tale A Grain of Truth by Andrzej Sapkowski. This narrative initially solely involves Geralt when he encounters the cursed part-beast, part-man Nivellan, however, the show has altered this story to include Ciri.

The Witcher Season 2 Cast

Season 2 would witness the addition of 4 known witchers. To begin, Kim Bodnia’s craggy old father persona Vesemir would make an appearance. He is the world’s oldest and wisest surviving witcher, as well as the man who reared Geralt from an early age at Kaer Morhen—he shaped Geralt into the witcher he is now (literally). The other 3 are Eskel (Thue Ersted Rasmussen), Lambert (Paul Bullion), and Ciri’s sword-fighting tutor Con (Yasen Atour).

Additionally, Kristofer Hivju would play Nivellin. Fans of the series will remember that name from one of the most famous Witcher novels, The Last Wish. Hivju, who portrayed Tormund Giantsbane on Game of Thrones, is as near to flawless casting as you can get.

The Witcher season 2 introduces the following new characters:

  • Vesemir – Kim Bodnia
  • Lambert – Paul Bullion
  • Eskel – Thue Ersted Rasmussen
  • Nivellin – Kristofer Hivju
  • Philippa Eilhart – Cassie Clare
  • Rience – Chris Fulton
  • Ba’lian – Kevin Doyle
  • Codringher – Simon Callow
  • Dijkstra – Graham McTavish
  • Nenneke – Adjoa Andoh
  • Coën – Yasen Atour
  • Francesca – Mecia Simson
  • Fenn – Liz Carr
  • Eskel – Basil Eidenbenz
  • Vereena – Bjorn
  • Coën Agnes – Yasen Atour
  • Queen Meve – Rebecca Hanssen
  • Lydia – Aisha Fabienne Ross
  • Lambert – Paul Bullion
  • King Henselt – Edward Rowe

The Witcher Season 2 Plot

Here’s the plot summary published by Netflix; “Considering that Yennefer’s life was forfeited in the Combat of Sodden, Geralt of Rivia transports Princess Cirilla to the securest location he knows: his childhood home of Kaer Morhen. While the Continent’s rulers, elves, humans, as well as demons battle for domination on the outside, he should protect the girl from something actually more dangerous: the unfamiliar power she holds on the inside.”

Season 2 seems to incorporate the Wild Hunt, based on photographs acquired by fansite Redanian Information during production. The Wild Hunt is The Witcher 3’s last antagonist, while fans of the books will remember them from their pursuit of Ciri in the fourth book, Time of Contempt. We do not yet know the extent to which these eerie horsemen will make an appearance.

Season 2’s storyline will be more linear now that most of The Witcher’s core protagonists are in one area (and at the same time), Hissrich stated in an AMA with fans. Season 2 will also “delve more into Cahir and Fringilla,” the plot’s villains so far, according to Hissrich.

Moreover, Geralt’s armor has been significantly beefed up for season 2. Ciri, on the other hand, is being humiliated. She seems to be going through a lot of maturation at Kaer Morhen. Meanwhile, Jaskier has a more “rock and roll” aesthetic, in the words of actor Joey Batey.

Updates On The Witcher Season 3 & Future Projects

As Netflix is still basking in the massive success it received from The Squid Game, it comes as no surprise that they’re going to want to leverage the popularity of The Witcher as well. While Lauren Hissrich, the show’s creator, recently disclosed that The Witcher season 3 has not been formally confirmed, The Witcher’s showrunner has already planned seven seasons.

Lauren Hissrich, showrunner of The Witcher series, is hopeful about the show’s future popularity and has already planned six further seasons if everything goes well.

After all, six books, two short stories, including three videogames with an abundance of outstanding tales provide enough fodder.

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, a new Netflix anime film, has premiered, providing a glimpse of a young Vesemir ahead of his live-action entrance in The Witcher season two. However, this younger Vesemir may surprise those who are familiar with him from the video games and books.

Nightmare of the Wolf was co-created by Witcher showrunner Lauren Hissrich and Company Mir (the studio behind The Legend of Korra).

This anime origin tale extends the universe of The Witcher: Prior to Geralt, there was Vesemir, a dashing young witcher who fled poverty by slaying monsters for money. However, when a mysterious new creature starts terrorizing a politically volatile nation, Vesemir embarks on a perilous expedition that compels him to face his own demons.

The Witcher: Blood Origin

Not satisfied with extending the Witcher series and developing an animated film, Netflix has now greenlit a prequel series investigating the history of the first Witcher.

The story is based 1,200 years earlier in Geralt of Rivia, where the realms of monsters, mankind, and elves intermingled, resulting in the birth of the first Witcher.

Lauren Hissrich, who is also the showrunner for The Witcher, is co-creating it along with Declan de Barra, who wrote one episode in the very first season. The series would consist of 6 episodes.

Jodie Turner-Smith was recently cast as the primary character Éile, who has abandoned her job as an elite fighter to pursue a career as a wandering singer.

Conclusion

Over the years, Netflix has given us excellent shows like Sacred Games, Money Heist, and others. The Witcher is just another accomplishment in their kitty.
