The French Open 2022: Schedule, Location, Players, and More

The French Open, formally known as Roland-Garros, is a significant tennis event held annually in late May in Paris’s Stade Roland-Garros. Roland Garros, a French aviator, is the tournament’s and venue’s namesake. It is the second of four Grand Slam occasions held every year. The Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open are the other three.

Currently, the French Open is the only Grand Slam event hosted on clay. The French Open is often regarded as the most physically demanding event in the world due to the seven rounds required for a title, the clay surface features (slower speed, more bounce), and the best-of-five-set men’s singles match.

French Open History

Officially termed Les Internationaux de France de Tennis (the “French Internationals of Tennis” in English), the event is referred to in all languages as Roland-Garros and is nearly often referred to in English as the French Open. Both the stadium and the tournament are hyphenated as Roland-Garros since French spelling regulations require that the parts of a location or event titled after a person be united by a hyphen.

In 1891, the Championnat de France was often referred to as the French Championships in English. This competition was accessible only to tennis players who have been members of French clubs. H. Briggs, a British national who lived in Paris and has been a part of the Club Stade Français, was the inaugural winner. He beat P. Baigneres in straight sets in the final.

In 1897, the inaugural women’s singles event had four competitors. The mixed doubles competition was established in 1902, while the women’s doubles competition was added in 1907. No match was held between 1915 and 1919 because of World War I.

The French Championships were open to all amateurs worldwide in 1925, and the International Lawn Tennis Federation named it a major competition. It was contested on clay courts at the Stade Français in Saint-Cloud (the former location of the World Hard Court Championships) in 1925 and 1927. In 1926, the Racing Club de France’s Croix-Catelan hosted the tournament in Paris, the preceding French club members-only clay-court tournament.

Ball boys and ball girls

There were 230 “ramasseurs de balles” at the 2020 French Open (literally “gatherers of balls” in English). They range in age from 12 to 16 years and wear similar shirts and shorts. Ball boys and ball girls are selected to compete in the French Open via an application procedure that received roughly 4,000 applications from across France in 2020. After their selection, they are coached in the week’s events before the French Open.

The Novak Djokovic Controversy

Tennis star Novak Djokovic may be prevented from competing at the French Open after legislators approved a bill mandating vaccination against coronavirus for everyone entering sports stadiums and other public facilities. Djokovic is a non-vaccinated player.

Once the vaccination pass becomes legislation, its usage will be “required for all spectators, clinicians, French or international professionals to attend public events,” French Sports Minister Roxana Maracineanu stated Sunday.

Djokovic should not expect to play “if he violates a regulation that applies to spectators, ball boys, and professionals who will work and operate a store at Roland-Garros,” veteran Interior Minister Christophe Castaner announced on RMC radio on Monday.

What sort of society would we live in if we believed that, like a star, we could break the rules?” Castaner said that the tournament’s organizers had committed to adhering to France’s COVID-19 vaccination rules.

The French Open is the following major slam tennis tournament from late May to early June.

Djokovic lost the last court challenge to his expulsion from Australia on Sunday.

A panel of three judges decided unanimously in favor of the Australian government, which had revoked Djokovic’s visa on public health grounds, thereby excluding him from the Australian Open, which he has won nine times.
