Johnny purchased the village as a joke when the family had much more money than they ever could spend, but it now serves as a humorous wake-up call for the family. Over the course of six seasons, the show has given us memorable characters — Dan Levy’s David and Annie Murphy’s Alexis stand out — and memorable stories that, unexpectedly, made us cheer for this dysfunctional family. While the first season is fantastic, a spoiler-filled surprise in the second season truly unlocks the show’s potential and takes that daring style of narrative through to the finish, replete with running Blake Bortles jokes and all-knowing burritos.

Hasmukh is an enjoyable watch, for the most part, thanks to its unusual plot. However, it suffers from inconsistent scripting, with some jokes landing successfully while others fall flat.

Gillian Anderson plays Dr Jean Milburn, the mother of Otis (Asa Butterfield), a young sex therapist who has to deal with his mother’s domineering ways at home while also dispensing his own counsel to his pals as part of an underground treatment network. Despite the program’s fondness for ’80s high-school clichés, there’s genuine depth and care put into how these teenagers are depicted and their relationships with sex on the show. In addition, Anderson has superb comic timing.

It depicts the reality of what these young people have to cope with, such as living in impoverished conditions, having to deal with mounting financial obligations, and having to study for long periods of time each day. The treatment, on the other hand, is quite lighthearted, and you won’t find yourself dreading the episodes as you go through them.

The show’s title and position as a rom-com/musical hybrid on The CW may put you off at first, but as heroine Rebecca Bunch will explain, the issue with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is much more complex than that. Although the program crosses genres often, it never quite becomes a dramedy due to the superb comic timing of its outstanding ensemble, headed by Rachel Bloom as Rebecca and Donna Lynne Champlin as Bex’s colleague and BFF, Paula, who also appear in the show.

While the show’s songs (such as “Settle for Me,” “Textmergency,” “West Covina,” and “Dream Ghost”) contain plenty of comedy, it’s the show’s throwaway instances that really make it stand out: Paula the attempting to sing raccoon, Daryl declaring himself a “bothsexual,” Heather’s expertise of mating signals, and every aside spoken by Father Brah. If watching this program makes us crazier than we already are, then so be it.
