The triumph of Pushpa: The Rise has abruptly woken up the B-Town titans from their deep sleep and made them sniff the coffee. Almost everyone wants to bestow praise on South-Indian stars, reproduce South movies and create reels on Oo Antava.

But, there’s one film that could break this trend – the Gehraiyaan movie. Admittedly, it doesn’t have a hero or an item number, or a Rs 100 crore VFX investment, but there is something that is tremendously intriguing about this project. If things turn out well and the film is like the trailer we just viewed, then Gehraiyaan would be a game-changer for its main actors.

After weaving his charm with Kapoor & Sons, Shakun Batra returns with yet another painstakingly constructed and created narrative. The director launched the teaser of his new film Gehraiyaan featuring Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Ananya Panday in the key parts. A cosmopolitan and complex narrative of friendship, life and love, the teaser of Gehraiyaan is a welcome change.

While it seems fascinating, the Gehraiyaan trailer surely makes you crave more. The 2-minute teaser talks about friendships, romance, and the complex connection with deception. However, Deepika’s spark with Siddhanth has undoubtedly ignited the screens on fire. To add, this Shakun Batra directorial will be Deepika’s debut work alongside Ananya & Siddhant, making it one of the most awaited releases of the year.

An 18+ movie, the film was initially set for a January 2022 premiere. Gehraiyaan will now be available to watch on Amazon Prime Video beginning 11 February. Dhariya Karwa, Naseeruddin Shah, and Rajat Kapur also feature in crucial parts in the film.

Shakun Batra, Sumit Roy, Ayesha DeVitre, with Yash Sahai co-wrote the screenplay. Along with Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar, and Apoorva Mehta, Batra is producing Gehraiyaan. The film is being produced by Batra’s Jouska Films, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, alongside Viacom18 Studios.

Gehraiyaan Movie Plot

Alisha Khanna, 30, is an aspirant who has reached a crossroads in her life. Her six-year relationship has become monotonous, her career has encountered numerous roadblocks, and just as she has learned to embrace this reality as unalterable, her life is upended by the entrance of her cousin, Tia.

Tia enters the scene with her fiance, Zain, someone whom Alisha reconnects over a troubled past and a shared desire to escape its confines. The narrative follows Alisha and Zain as they meet the demons of their past on their way to escape them.

Development

At the MAMI film festival’s 21st edition in October 2019, Batra was rumoured to be directing Deepika Padukone in the main role and describing the film’s concept as domestic noir. Padukone visited Dharma Productions’ headquarters in December 2019 and met Batra for a brief script talk regarding the project. Padukone was chosen to star in the film after being pleased by the narrative.

In mid-December 2019, it was rumoured that Vicky Kaushal and Siddhant Chaturvedi would play the male roles, and another actress would join the cast. The latter was confirmed, and later that month, Ananya Panday was confirmed as the film’s second female star. In March 2020, Dhairya Karwa was chosen for one of the main roles.

Filming

The film’s pre-production started in March 2020. Filming was originally scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka, but due to the COVID-19 epidemic and consequent lockdown, the project was delayed six months and relocated to Goa due to its comparable scenery. The first schedule, which started in September 2020 and spanned around one month, began in September 2020. In November 2020, the crew returned to Mumbai, where shooting proceeded for another month. Filming concluded in August 2021. After two years of being referred to as Production No. 70, a teaser was published on 20 December 2021, confirming the film’s title as Gehraiyaan.

Music

Kabeer Kathpalia (OAFF), with Savera Mehta, an independent musical partnership making their feature film debut, wrote its soundtrack and original score. Kausar Munir wrote the songs’ lyrics with Ankur Tewari. The tune used in the film’s announcement trailer is Lothika Jha’s Hindi rendition of “Frontline,” with Tewari writing the Hindi lyrics.
