Airtel To Raise Rs 5000 Crore, Operating Metrics To Improve

Bharti Airtel plans to raise Rs 5000 crore very soon as part of its measures to solidify the balance sheet. The telcos has been adopting several innovative techniques to stay afloat and get through the financial crisis that has hit the telecom industry during the last few years.

With a fund-raising initiative via rupee-denominated bonds, the company is very likely to have a smooth run during the 5G spectrum auctions that are expected this year. It is clear that a lot of thought has gone into the process and Bharti Airtel is determined to keep its place secure and trustworthy among its subscribers.

The Rs 5000 crore fundraiser is mainly aimed at the local market and while this is in the pipeline, the telcos are going a step farther to accumulate more sources of funds to continue their recovery strategy.

“The rupee-linked corporate bonds with multiple maturities may come with multiple tenors in range of three to 10 years,” exclaimed a senior executive involved in local bond sales. The ten-year paper would come with around an 8.25% interest rate.

Another option that is being considered to raise funds is going for an offshore bond issue. If this is the case, Airtel will put off the directive actions required till the April-June period as there are still certain unclear events in the global market. The geopolitical issues occurring have made such financial transactions more complicated.

As we mentioned earlier, the success of raising this fund is a key factor in determining Airtel’s stand in the 5G spectrum auctions. Also, the company has acquired a commitment for $1 billion overall investment from Google to work out its future strategies. How the funds will be utilised is yet to be announced by the concerned authorities.
