Facebook to be known as Meta hereafter. Mark Zuckerberg unveils the new name, putting an end to the curiosity piqued after the last announcement. Plans to rebrand the company to be more than just a social media platform in progress.

At the Facebook Connect augmented and virtual reality conference held on Thursday, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the new name for Facebook. The Social media giant is now to be known as Meta.

This is a long-awaited announcement as earlier plans on rebranding Facebook were revealed last week.

The rebranding plans are not just limited to adopting a new name, Facebook is now looking forward to growing beyond being just a social media platform. Along with the announcement of the new name, Zuckerberg revealed that the stock ticker also would be changed, effective from December 1st from FB to MVRS.

Today we are seen as a social media company, but in our DNA we are a company that builds technology to connect people, and the metaverse is the next frontier just like social networking was when we got started, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.

To add to the grandeur of the event, a demonstration of the plans in the pipeline regarding the metaverse was also conducted. This captured the attention of the audience as the demo displayed a Pixar-style animation of the software that is going to be released in the future. Users were depicted as cartoon-like versions of themselves hanging out in space. Overall, the theme and updates clearly showed that metaverse had every potential to be mainstream shortly, ie within the next 10 years.
